The nonprofit organization Local First Utah is encouraging Utahns to spend money at local businesses in order to strengthen local communities. Organization members are concerned that the market share of goods and services sold by local businesses has eroded, due to growth among big-box stores, internet retailers and mass merchandisers. Members hope that strengthening local businesses will lead to more choices for consumers and more living-wage scale jobs.

Local First Utah schedules celebrations and educational activities each year during the week of July 4th. An "Independents' Week" schedule is available on the group's website: Localfirst.org
