July 1, 2008:

Hollyhock WeevilHollyhocks thrive in northern Utah's climate and they seem to require only a small amount of attention. The tall, slender stalks with multiple blooms are very attractive, but upon close inspection, you'll see that many of the plants play host to some very unattractive insects: Hollyhock Weevils. The bugs resemble tiny aardvarks with body armor and they multiply quickly. The weevils are beetles that eat holes in the plants' flower buds and seeds. Spraying the bugs with a soap solution is somewhat ineffective. Most experts seem to agree that the use of a pesticide is the best option. Some also suggest the use of an insecticidal soap.
